It definitely seems like a lifetime ago when I first started publishing local historical material. I had only been in the community of Hespeler for  about 5 years when I started releasing booklets and a calendar in 1999. Who Was Dolores Carroll? Imagine you were a leading female vocalist in the 1950s from Windsor and you record a single with the legendary Four Tops providing backing vocals and the legendary Maurice King and his Wolverines band also on it. Say hello to Dolores Carroll. Sadly many Windsor music fans don't even know she existed. From the mid 1950s til around 1961 Dolores was a fixture in Windsor entertainment rooms, headlining the Kilarney, Thomas Inn and Elbow Rooms. In 1955, she signed with a new label out of New York City, Chateau Records, and recorded the single - “I Just Can't Keep the Tears from Tumblin Down/Everyday Knows. It featured a very young Four Tops and the more established Detroit group Maurice King and his Wolverines. I could not find the rockin “ I Just Can't Keep the Tears from Tumblin Down ” side on the internet to listen to by Dolores but thankfully you can listen to Everybody Knows on youtube. 168 Bechtel - Samuel Bechtel Homestead - 1816   It is no secret that the City of Cambridge had done little to designate or protect buildings in Hespeler. The removal of a complete historical block at 2-10 Queen Street clearly demonstrates how easy it is to wipe out a century of history. Now the oldest home in Hespeler with strong connections to the original Mennonite community is for sale. The Samuel Bechtel  home on 168 Bechtel Street is listed for sale. It was one of the first pioneering families that came from Pennsylvania to this area. He later donated land to build the first community meeting place, school and burial ground. The house was originally built in 1815 and is arguably the most historically significant home in Hespeler. My friend, the late George Bechtel, always lamented the fact his family home did not have heritage designation. The home is for sale for $2,649,000.
